UMTS is fast mobile broadband. It is faster than GSM, GPRS, EDGE and almost as fast as HSDPA. For more information on what it is, see wikipedia's article.

Hardware
To find out if you have a UMTS modem and your kernel recognizes it, use the command
hwinfo --modem --short
Connecting
- Connect to the internet via an UMTS connection using SUSE 11.4 -- using NetworkManager under SUSE 11.4 to connect via an Otelo USB SurfStick to VodaPhone's German network
- Connect to the internet via an UMTS connection using SUSE 11.0 -- using UMTSMon under SUSE 11.0 to connect via a Fonic USB SurfStick to O2's German network
